Fort Collins Moves to Quarterfinals, Competes for $5 Million Georgetown University Energy Prize

Fort Collins has been selected to advance to the quarterfinalist round of the Georgetown University Energy Prize (GUEP), a $5 million incentive competition to reduce America’s energy consumption.Over the course of two years, participants will be challenged to rethink their local energy use and implement creative strategies to increase efficiency. To compete for the final $5 million prize, which will be awarded in 2017, local governments, residents, businesses and utilities will have to work together to save energy at all levels.
Fort Collins is among 52 small- to mid-sized communities advancing to the quarterfinals and is well positioned to lead the way in energy efficiency. Over the coming months, Fort Collins will continue to fine-tune its energy-efficiency plans, and starting January 1, 2015, will work within the community to achieve even greater savings throughout the two-year duration of the competition.
To get to this level, Fort Collins already has demonstrated innovative approaches to save energy; assembled a diverse team; outlined an extensive energy-efficiency plan; and secured signed commitments from local government, electric and natural gas utilities, and community organizations.
Throughout the competition, participants have the potential to save more than $1 billion in total energy costs and cut millions of tons of CO2 emissions. The outcomes from the GUEP will identify innovative, replicable, scalable solutions that can be implemented across the country—all with the goal to help America rethink how energy is used.
