Fort Collins Utilities Observes Public Power Week, October 5-11

Posted on: Oct-02-2014

The safety, quality and reliability of our community’s electricity are priorities for Fort Collins Utilities’ Light & Power. Public Power Week, October 5-11, provides the opportunity to recognize the many behind-the-scenes employees who work year-round to ensure our electricity remains safe and is available when needed.

Since its establishment in 1935, Light & Power has adapted to changing technology and citizen needs and has progressed beyond industry standards. Today, the utility operates and maintains a nationally recognized, state-of-the-art underground electric distribution system, including nearly 1,800 miles of electric lines, seven distribution substations and just over 11,000 streetlights, with some of the lowest rates in the state.

Throughout 2013, Light & Power experienced 99.9982 percent electric system reliability—the highest in 30 years. Not only was system reliability at an all-time high, but when an outage did occur, its average duration was 75 percent shorter (an average of 9.58 minutes) than the other public power agencies who report reliability indices to the American Public Power Association (APPA).

The utility is one of 184 of the nation’s more than 2,000 public power utilities to earn the Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3 ®) Designation from APPA for providing customers with the highest degree of reliable and safe electric service. Of those awarded, Light & Power was one of the few utilities that received the Diamond Designation—the highest level of recognition.

As the utility progresses, youth and adult education, conservation programs and a variety of efficiency rebates provide awareness and savings opportunities that benefit both the customer and the environment.
