Free Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event, Sept. 12

To help community members safely and properly dispose of the hazardous wastes that have accumulated in their homes, the City of Fort Collins will host a free household hazardous waste collection event, Sat., Sept. 12, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., City of Fort Collins Streets Facility, 625 Ninth St. (near Vine Drive and Lemay Avenue; see map at https://www.fcgov.com/hazwaste .Items that will be accepted include pesticides; painting, cleaning and automotive products; household batteries; CFL bulbs; personal care products (hair products, lotion); and mercury-containing items (thermostat and appliance switches, thermometers, button-shaped batteries).
Items that will not be accepted include tires; e-waste; asbestos; explosives; bio-waste (needles, bandages); and pharmaceuticals. Commercial and industrial wastes also will not be accepted.
When packing and transporting hazardous products, follow these safety tips:
- Store items upright in boxes or tubs (do not bring them loose in bags).
- Place similar items together (do not stack or pile on top of each other).
- Ensure containers are sealed and not leaking.
- Store acids and oxidizers separately, away from each other and other hazardous products.
- Keep items away from children and pets.
Residents also may take their hazardous products to the Larimer County’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility (hours and details at http://larimer.org/solidwaste/haz.htm .
