Fort Collins Utilities to Flush the Water Distribution System, Beginning April 1

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Fort Collins Utilities crews will flush the water distribution system beginning Monday, April 1, 7 a.m.-5 p.m., weekdays, for approximately four weeks (weather permitting). When flushing Downtown, crews will begin at approximately 5 a.m. in order to be out of the area as quickly as possible.
Crews will start on Grandview Avenue and move eastward to Peterson Street. The approximate northern boundary is Laporte Avenue and the approximate southern boundary is Laurel Street. All of Downtown Fort Collins will be included in the flushing.
When flushing, fire hydrants are opened and water flows through at high speeds, cleaning the pipes, and removing the sediments that can affect the water’s taste and color. Flushing is an essential preventative maintenance strategy for the water distribution system, helps maintain water quality and keeps our water fresh.
The flushing process doesn’t typically interrupt water service, although it can happen on occasion.
A decrease in water pressure is more common.
Sometimes the sudden rush of water can stir up sediments in the pipes and cause the water to become cloudy or discolored for a short time. This water is not harmful, though it may stain laundry. If you experience cloudy or discolored water:
- wait until the nearby flushing is complete
- remove faucet aerators or filters
- run the COLD water for 5-10 minutes (usually the water clears within a few minutes, if flushing in the area is complete)
If you notice improvements, continue running the cold water for a few more minutes or until the water is clear. If it is not improving, turn off the water, wait 30 minutes and repeat. If it still doesn’t clear, you can call 970-221-6700 to report your concerns. Another option is to run the garden hose, weather permitting, until the water clears. It's safe to use this water on plants and landscape.
